If you’re used to utilities being handled by your landlord or the government, Germany’s system might seem a bit different. Here’s what you need to know:
Choose your own energy provider
Electricity isn’t included in your rent. Without a choice, you’ll be on a costly default tariff. Find providers online or simply choose Octopus Energy.
Beware of the Grundversorgung
If you don’t sign a contract, you’ll be placed in the Grundversorgung (basic supply), which usually comes with higher electricity prices in Germany.

¹We will reimburse you in full for any additional costs incurred by you and proven to us (e.g. by submitting invoices) compared to the Octopus tariff you have chosen from the agreed supply date. The prerequisite is that you provide us with all the requested information for the switch of supplier (name, delivery address, electricity or gas meter and indication of the correct change option (self-canceled, move-in or Octopus canceled) in a timely manner. The information must be correct in terms of content and must always be sent to us when you register online, but at the latest before we give notice of termination on your behalf.
²In order to receive the credit note, the customer must call 0800 400 8010 with a clear description of the dissatisfaction.
