Tenant power means that electricity is generated directly on site – by a solar PV system on the rooftop of your house. The electricity is then passed on directly to the tenants in the building without having to use the public grid. If more electricity is produced than is needed, the surplus is fed into the grid and can be used by others. And if you ever need electricity from the grid, this is regulated fairly and transparently via Octopus Energy.

Your tenant power tariff works quite simply: the electricity you consume is generated directly on site by the solar PV system on the roof of your building. The more solar power you consume, the cheaper your electricity tariff becomes, as you need less electricity from the public grid. Excess electricity is fed into the grid and made available to the general public. This allows you to benefit from affordable, sustainable electricity while contributing to the energy transition.

Yes, the tenant power tariff is required by law to be at least 10% cheaper than the basic supply tariff. This is mainly because the electricity is generated directly on site by the solar PV system. This eliminates many additional costs, such as the use of the public electricity grid or certain levies. In addition, the production costs for solar power are particularly low, which generally makes the tariff cheaper than other electricity tariffs.

If the solar PV system does not supply enough electricity, the missing electricity is automatically provided from the public grid. Octopus Energy ensures that this additional electricity is environmentally friendly and takes care of the entire supply (residual electricity supply). Of course, all of this is already included in your tenant power tariff.

The tenant power contract usually runs for 24 months. But if you move out, you have a special right of termination! All you have to do is provide Octopus Energy with written proof of your move. We will then automatically terminate your contract on your move-out date – it's easy and there are no additional costs.

On the final bill, we show separately how many kWh you have consumed from solar and grid electricity. The respective conditions at the time of conclusion of the contract apply to the different quantities (solar power: 24 ct/kWh, grid electricity: approx. 34 ct/kWh). We also show how much you have saved with our tenant power tariff compared to regular tariffs. Everything is clearly shown on your bill.

In order for us to offer tenant power, certain requirements must be met. For example, the building needs a suitable roof for the solar PV system, enough tenants who consume the electricity directly in the same building, and the landlord's consent. Since these conditions are not met everywhere, we can currently only offer tenant power at certain locations. However, we are constantly working on adding more buildings to enable even more people to benefit from affordable solar power.
